Simply put, Dan Gellert is one of the finest old-time musicians working today – a legend and touch stone in old-time music circles. As a youth, Dan became familiar with traditional styles of music from old recordings he heard growing up in New Jersey, and in the 60’s began playing fiddle and banjo while a student at Indiana University. Steeped in old-time music traditions, Dan developed his own style of playing, finding and adding a special voice to old-time string music. His knowledge and respect for traditional music is deep, and his ability to create and improvise within its themes inspires. We are extremely proud to have Dan Gellert as part of JFFC 2017 – a rare opportunity for lovers of old-time banjo to learn from a one of the most established and renowned exponents of what is truly a revived and thriving style of music.
